September Light

September in my garden. Warmth, sun, light - we missed them in June. Balance's been achieved.

Russian Sage - very independent, NO-maintenance, self-spreading, loves poor dry soil in my garden.

Poppies - I love their flowers and their seedpods.

Joe Pye Weed,  Double Knock-Out Roses and Perennial Phlox.

 Double Knock Out Roses - eaten by deer in June, they are doing their best in August and September.

Well, poppies again.  I said I love them! I removed wilted leaves and left just seedpods.

Russian Sage again. 

Tomatoes Black Krim .   

I hope they will get black!  We got a couple of ripe fruit from this particular bush, but these guys are far from being ripen.  Tomatoes are very late this year!

Double Knock Out Roses. I saved them from deers with 'Liquid Fence'.

Campanula is blooming again!

Fuchsia is surrounded by Euphorbia and Melianthus. I am proud of my Melianthus - he survived the winter!

Mediterranean Garden (The Butchart Gardens)

As they say on the Butchart Gardens website, "... we experience somewhat of a Mediterranean climate, with a typically warm/dry summer followed by a wet/cool winter". Well, if the climate is Mediterranean, then there should be a Mediterranean garden here.
And, what a garden it is! This wonderful, lush part of the magnificent Butchart Gardens is not big, but I enjoyed every minute I spent there.

Abutilon (Parlor maple or Flowering maple)

Romneya coulteri

 Cynara (Cardoon)

Dwarf Delphinium grandiflorum 'Blue Mirror' with absolutely beautiful deep electric-blue flowers! Not tall and spiky, it forms low bushy mounds of lacy leaves. Blooms throughout the summer, can self sow. Tolerant of hot & humid summers and does very well in regions with short & cool summers.

Zinnia angustifolia 'Starbright Mix' with single orange, yellow and gold flowers. Drought, heat and humidity tolerant. Very informal, graceful plants!

Craspedia (Billy Balls, Billy Buttons, Woolyheads, Drumstick Flowers). Charming, whimsical and funny!

 Firm yellow globe-shaped flower heads sit on the top of tall slender stems. Striking effect!

Next picture - Gazania 'Tallent Orange'. Tolerates drought, heat and poor soil. Bright daisy-like flowers last from summer to frost. Interesting grey foliage.

New Support For My Rose Bush

'Carefree Marvel' shrub rose started as a small bare root in my garden. It is huge now.

It crowds  its neighbors and  blocks  the garden path.

I knew it needed a good support. 

One of the spring windstorms provided the material, madrona's trunk.

Love it!
